What type of wood flooring are you going to choose? Today you will find a number of choices from the type of wood to the size and installation requirements, so your choices may seem unlimited. It is true you will have a wide assortment to choose from, and each wood type will provide its own unique advantages and appearance. Today most home owners are going with wood floors. This has been the trend for several years now.

When choosing which wood floor to use you should become familiar with the most common terms used to describe the various types and styles. As for color and pattern you will have choices from oak, maple, cherry, pine, and others. Colors will vary depending on which color stain you decide on.

Solid wood flooring:
This is just what its name implies, milled lumber, and it is available finished and unfinished and as strips and as planks.
• Strips have a thickness range of 5/16″ to 3/4″ and a width ranging from 1½” to 2 ¼”
• Planks have a thickness range of 1/2″ to 3/4″ and a width ranging from 3″ to 8″

Unfinished wood flooring:
Choosing this type of flooring may save you some money up front, but just remember that you will need to sand your floors before you will be able to apply a stain and finish.

Pre-finished wood flooring:
This type will cost you more to purchase but you will only have to worry about installing the flooring, eliminating the job of sanding and finishing.

Parquet wood flooring:
Offers a unique pattern designed from individual pieces of wood held together by glue or some type of a mechanical fastener

Laminate wood flooring:
Laminates come in a number of styles and are made from applying a quality veneer to a piece of lumber or lumber composite. They too come finished and unfinished. Laminates have a strict tolerance as to their dimensions making them great for glue down or floating floors. Laminates are an especially good choice if you will be using them in a basement or a high humidity area.

Laminate wood flooring is produced in:
• Strips which come in thicknesses of 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″ or 5/8″ and in widths of 2″ too 2 1/4″
• Planks that come in thicknesses of 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″ or 5/8″ and in widths of 3″ to 8″
• Parquets which are one-piece wood tiles available in 9″ x 9″ or 8″ x 8″ and 12″ x12″

Impregnated acrylic wood flooring:
A pre-finished wood flooring which has been impregnated with an acrylic treatment under high pressure. This treatment forces the acrylic deep into the pores of the wood and when dried creates a tremendously hard and durable surface. Impregnated acrylic floors are resistant to moisture and abrasion and are commonly used in the commercial industry. However, they are an excellent choice if you are covering a high traffic area of your home. Impregnated acrylic flooring comes in an assortment of styles and colors.
